Biography of John Lennon

Who doesn't know John Winston Ono Lennon or who is often called by the name John Lennon? He is an English songwriter, singer, and founder of The Beatles - the most commercially successful music band in history.

John Lennon was born on October 9, 1940 in Liverpool, North West England (Northwest England) with the birth name John Winston Lennon, but later changed his name to John Winston Ono Lennon after marrying Yoko Ono.


He is a famous singer who is known worldwide, as a political activist and musician of the Beatles Band. Previously he was with the Beatles. In 1970, after the dissolution of The Beatles, he continued his solo career with his wife. Then after five years of a solo career, he finally breathed his last after being shot with a gun by his fan named Mark David Chapman.


John Lennon and his love life


John Lennon failed to start a household and married twice. His first marriage to Cynthia Powell ultimately failed because of the presence of Yoko Ono who later became his second wife.

In 1957, Lennon first met Cynthia Powell at Liverpool Art College as a fellow student. Powell dyed his hair blonde after he heard that Lennon was obsessed with French actress Brigitte Bardot.



Upon hearing that Powel was pregnant in 1962, Lennon decided to marry her on August 23, 1962, which is located at Liverpool's Mount Pleasant Register Office.


On April 8, 1963, John Lennon's first son, John Charles Julian Lennon, was born at Sefton General Hospital. Although Lennon did not spread the news because of his strong commitment to The Beatles which could affect his career.

Three years after that, John Lennon met Yoko while at the Indica Gallery, at Mason's Yard, London. In the end, Ono started visiting and calling Lennon's house. In 1968, Lennon divorced Cynthia Powell because of his affair with Yoko Ono. Later, Lennon and Yoko married in Gibraltar on March 20, 1969.


Although, the relationship with Yoko wasn't completely harmonious. Their relationship was stretched. Then Lennon moved with their assistant, May Pang to California, starting an 18 month period which he later referred to as "the lost weekend". In 1975, Lennon and Yoko reunited and had their first son named Sean Ono Lennon.

Lennon Forms the band the Quarrymen


In 1957, John Lennon formed a band called The Quarrymen together with his school friends. The name "The Quarrymen" comes from their school which is called Quarry Bank High School. They usually perform at school parties and dances.


On July 6, 1957, they played at a church event in St. Petersburg. John, Woolton and meet with Paul McCartney. Paul was very impressed with the band's performance and joined The Quarrymen. Then Lennon and McCartney began writing songs together. One of the songs is "Hello Little Girl."


Later, McCartney introduced his friend George Harrison to join the group. Lennon also invited his close friend Stuart Sutcliffe to become a base.

After several years, in 1960 The Quarrymen changed its name to the Beatles consisting of John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Stuart Sutcliffe, and Pete Best. They managed to get a contract with a club in Hamburg, Germany with their manager Allan Williams. Because George Harrison was not old enough to work, the Hamburg government was forced to deport The Beatles.


Not long after, they returned to Liverpool and became immensely popular at the Cavern Club. Although not long after that, in 1961, they returned to Hamburg to record "My Bonnie" with Tony Sheridan. Then once again, they returned to the Cavern Club in Liverpool. It was then that Brian Epstein, owner of NEMS Records, witnessed the Beatles' performance and was so amazed that he volunteered to be their manager.


Then, they offered their demo tape to the recording studio. Parlophone Records, a label that is under the supervision of EMI, accepted The Beatles on the condition that they have to change their drummer so that they changed their drummer to Richard Starkey who later became known as the Ringgo Star.


They became very successful in England. Their single "Love Me Do" immediately ranked 17th on the charts. Moreover, in 1964 their song entitled "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was able to penetrate the American music industry which made The Beatles gain popularity all over the world.
